Teen Patti Hand Rankings Explained (Play Just for Fun)
Teen Patti hand rankings from Trail to High Card, with examples, how ties are broken and how the three-card ranking compares to Hazari. Social play, no betting.

Teen Patti ("three cards") is one of the most loved card games in South Asia. Everyone gets three cards and the best hand wins the round. The rules are simple, but the hand rankings trip up new players, especially the difference between a pure sequence and a sequence. This guide explains them all, with examples.
Our game Chatai Teen Patti is purely social: no chips, no cash and no betting. It's just the fun of the cards with friends or the computer.
Teen Patti hand rankings (highest to lowest)
| Rank | Hand | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Trail / Trio | Three cards of the same rank | A♠ A♥ A♦ |
| 2 | Pure Sequence | Three consecutive cards of the same suit | Q♥ J♥ 10♥ |
| 3 | Sequence | Three consecutive cards, mixed suits | 7♣ 6♦ 5♠ |
| 4 | Colour | Three cards of the same suit, not consecutive | K♦ 9♦ 3♦ |
| 5 | Pair | Two cards of the same rank | 9♠ 9♣ 4♥ |
| 6 | High Card | None of the above | A♣ J♦ 6♥ |
Trail (Trio)
The best hand in the game. A-A-A is the highest trail and 2-2-2 the lowest. Trails are rare: you'll see one only a couple of times in every thousand deals.
Pure Sequence
Three cards in a row, all the same suit. The highest is A-K-Q, then A-2-3, then K-Q-J, Q-J-10 and so on down to 4-3-2. (A-2-3 ranking second surprises a lot of people.)
Sequence
Like a pure sequence but with mixed suits. The same order applies: A-K-Q is highest, then A-2-3.
Colour
Three cards of one suit. To compare two colours, look at the highest card first, then the second, then the third.
Pair
Two cards of the same rank. The higher pair wins; if both pairs are equal, the third card decides.
High Card
If nobody has a combination, compare the highest cards, then the next highest, and so on.
How ties work
If two hands are exactly equal in rank and card values, for example two players holding K-Q-J sequences, most tables call it a tie and split the round. Some house rules break ties by suit, but there's no single standard, so agree before you start.
Probability: why a pair is better than you think
With just three cards, strong hands are rare. Roughly speaking:
- about 3 in 4 hands are just a high card;
- about 1 in 6 is a pair;
- colours, sequences and pure sequences together make up most of the rest;
- a trail turns up only a few times in a thousand deals.
So if you're holding a pair, you're already ahead of most hands.
Teen Patti and Hazari: same family
If you know Teen Patti, you already know most of Hazari. Hazari uses almost the same three-card rankings (Troy, Colour Run, Run, Colour, Pair, Indi) but makes you split 13 cards into four groups. Read our Hazari rules guide to try it. For the full history of the game, see the Teen Patti article on Wikipedia.
