Callbreak Rules and Strategy: A Complete Beginner's Guide

How to play Callbreak: dealing, calling your bid, why spades are always trump, the follow and overtake rules, scoring, and 6 strategy tips to beat the bots.

Callbreak: four cards played in a trick with the ace of spades as trump winning it

Callbreak (often written Call Break) is a fast, four-player trick-taking game hugely popular in Nepal, India and Bangladesh. Each round you make a "call": a promise of how many tricks you'll win. Hit it and you score; miss it and you lose points. Spades are always trumps, so there's no guessing, just pure card sense. Here are the rules and the strategy that separates good players from lucky ones.

Setup

  • 4 players, each playing alone.
  • A standard 52-card deck; aces are high, twos are low.
  • Every player gets 13 cards.
  • Spades are always trump.
  • A game is usually 5 deals, and the highest total score wins.

Calling (bidding)

After looking at their cards, each player in turn calls the number of tricks they expect to win. The minimum call is 1. Most apps and tables cap calls at 8, although some house rules allow up to 13. Everyone makes a call, and there's no passing.

A good call counts your likely winners:

  • Aces in side suits are usually 1 trick each.
  • Kings win if their suit's ace falls first or you hold the ace too.
  • High spades (A, K, Q) are almost always tricks.
  • Short suits (0 or 1 card) let you trump in early, which is often worth an extra trick.

Playing tricks

The player after the dealer leads first. Then:

  1. Follow suit if you can.
  2. If you're following suit, you must beat the highest card played so far if you can. This "overtake" rule is standard in most Callbreak apps.
  3. If you can't follow suit, you must play a spade (trump) if you have one, and beat any spade already played if possible.
  4. Only if you have neither the led suit nor a spade can you throw any card.

The highest spade wins the trick; if no spade was played, the highest card of the led suit wins. The winner leads the next trick.

Scoring

ResultScore
Win exactly your call (e.g. call 4, win 4)+4.0
Win more than your call (call 4, win 6)+4.2 (each extra trick adds 0.1)
Win fewer than your call (call 4, win 3)−4.0

The extra tricks are worth very little, and falling short costs the full call. That's the whole psychology of Callbreak: call accurately, and when in doubt call low.

6 Callbreak strategy tips

  1. Void a suit early. Throw away all the cards of your shortest side suit so you can start trumping when it's led.
  2. Lead your lonely king carefully. A single king (no ace) is often captured; lead low cards in that suit only if the ace has fallen.
  3. Count spades. There are 13. Knowing how many are left tells you when your small trumps have become winners.
  4. Punish over-callers. If an opponent has called high, lead suits that force them to spend trumps early.
  5. Don't win tricks you don't need. Once your call is safe, play under the winning card so another player can't reach their call cheaply.
  6. Save the ace of spades. It's the only card that is guaranteed to win a trick, so use it when a trick really matters.

Callbreak vs. Spades vs. Call Bridge

Callbreak is a cousin of Spades (played in partnerships in the US) and Call Bridge, a South Asian variant with similar calling. Our Card Adda app includes all three, plus 29, Hazari and Hearts, so you can switch between them in one download. Card Hero also offers Callbreak and Call Bridge alongside 29 and Hazari.

If you enjoy trick-taking, read how to play 29 next. It uses the same follow-suit rules, but with a hidden trump.

FAQ

Is spade always trump in Callbreak?

Yes. In Callbreak, spades are always the trump suit, so no trump is chosen during bidding.

What happens if I win more tricks than my call?

You score your call plus 0.1 for each extra trick. For example, a call of 3 with 5 tricks won scores 3.2.

How many rounds are in a game of Callbreak?

Most games are 5 deals. The player with the highest total after the fifth deal wins.

Can I play Callbreak without internet?

Yes. Card Adda and Card Hero include Callbreak and play fully offline against computer opponents.
