Quick Chess Traps: Scholar's Mate, Fool's Mate and Carlsen's 9-Move Win

The fastest checkmates in chess: Fool's Mate, Scholar's Mate and Magnus Carlsen's famous 9-move mate against Bill Gates, plus how to defend against each.

Scholar's Mate: the white queen and bishop attacking f7 for a quick checkmate

Every chess player remembers the first time they got checkmated in four moves. Quick traps work because they target the weakest square on the board, f7 (or f2 for White), which only the king defends at the start. Learn these three famous short games and you'll never fall for them, and you might catch a friend.

1. Fool's Mate: the fastest possible checkmate (2 moves)

  1. f3 e5
  2. g4?? Qh4#

White weakens the diagonal to their own king with two pawn moves, and Black's queen walks in. It's the shortest possible game ending in checkmate.

How to avoid it: don't push the f- and g-pawns early. Develop knights and bishops first.

2. Scholar's Mate: the classic 4-move trap

  1. e4 e5
  2. Qh5 Nc6
  3. Bc4 Nf6??
  4. Qxf7#

The queen and bishop both aim at f7. Black's natural-looking knight move ignores the threat, and the queen captures on f7 with checkmate, protected by the bishop.

How to defend: after 3.Bc4, play 3…g6, which blocks the queen's attack. If White continues with 4.Qf3, answer 4…Nf6, and your pieces are developed while White's queen is out too early. You can also meet 2.Bc4 with 2…Nf6, which stops the trap before it starts. Wikipedia's Scholar's mate article covers the variations.

3. Carlsen vs. Gates: mate in 9 with a bishop "gift"

In 2014, world champion Magnus Carlsen played Bill Gates on Norwegian TV. Gates had 2 minutes, Carlsen just 30 seconds, and it was over in 79 seconds (ChessBase report).

  1. e4 Nc6
  2. Nf3 d5
  3. Bd3 Nf6
  4. exd5 Qxd5
  5. Nc3 Qh5
  6. O-O Bg4
  7. h3 Ne5
  8. hxg4? Nfxg4
  9. Nxe5 Qh2#

The key idea: Carlsen puts his bishop on g4 as bait. Taking it with the h-pawn opens the h-file in front of White's castled king. Both black knights jump in, and the queen lands on h2 for checkmate, protected by the knight on g4.

How to defend: don't open lines in front of your castled king to grab material. White's mistake was 8.hxg4: leaving the bishop alone and keeping the h-file closed would have avoided the mate.

We replay this exact game on the chessboard on our home page: scroll to the chess section and watch the queen land on h2.

Why beginners fall for fast mates

  • Moving the queen early. It looks aggressive, but it's also a target.
  • Ignoring threats to f7/f2. Always ask, "What is my opponent attacking?"
  • Weakening pawns in front of the king. Each pawn move near your king opens a line.
  • Grabbing free pieces. If it looks too easy, look again, as Carlsen's bishop showed.
